astigmatism

An imperfection in the imaging properties of a lens or mirror. Light passing through different parts of an astigmatic lens, for example, is focused at different distances beyond the lens. Thus, the image of a point can appear variously as a line or an ellipse. The best image obtainable with such a lens is a small circle called the circle of least confusion.
